(Jungle-clad Karst hills make the region almost inaccessible, an ideal refuge for runaway slaves who formed their own community known as The Maroons.  The British gave up hunting them down and signed a peace treaty with them in 1738.  We visited, but first had to seek permission from the Maroon Leader.)
